Principles of periodotology involving assessment, etiology, risk factors, and classification of periodontal disease; basic treatment planning; and non-surgical periodontal therapy, as well as various types of therapeutic techniques available. This course requires a Differential Tuition Rate which is an additional fee of $215 charged per credit hour. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Identify the tissues of the periodontium and describe their function. 2. Distinguish between various stages of periodontal disease. 3. Identify and describe the AAP classifications of Periodontal Disease. 4. Identify and address local contributing factors to periodontal disease. 5. Name and describe the major systemic contributing risk factors for periodontitis. 6. Identify types of diabetes, medications associated with gingival enlargement, types of hormonal alterations, and types of periodontal disease associated with HIV infection. 7. Describe how patients' conditions, habits, and diseases contribute to his or her risk for developing periodontal disease. 8. Demonstrate the creation of an initial care plan for a patient with chronic periodontitis and how to set reasonable treatment goals. 9. Identify variables associated with periodontal disease and describe various theories of periodontal disease progression. 10. Define Biofilm and describe its role in the immune response related to Periodontal disease. Prerequisite: Admission to the Dixie State University Dental Hygiene program. SP
