Prerequisite(s): (ARTH 2710 or ARTH 2720) and University Advanced Standing. Traces the different directions photography has taken since its inception, using the social and cultural environment as a context. Investigates the ever-increasing use of photography by artists in the creative process from the first uses of the camera obscura to the present. Discusses the developments that set the stage for the "invention" of photography and how photography changed the role of artists in the 19th and 20th centuries. Covers documentary photography and the rise of fine art photography as separate art forms.
