Prerequisite(s): Admission to Professional Education Program or permission of department chair; University Advanced Standing. Introduces teachers to the teaching of English as a second language not only for linguistic development, but for cognitive, academic and social development. Includes classroom instruction and field experiences with children. Presents methods for promoting reading competence and fostering literacy in limited English-speaking children, grades K-6. Prepares teachers to teach English as a second language in U.S. public schools. Covers both theoretical and applied aspects of second language learning and teaching and provides techniques, activities, strategies and resources to plan instruction for English language learners (ELLs).
