Prerequisite(s): University Advanced Standing and admission to Professional Education Program or permission of department chair. Prepares pre-service secondary teachers to understand and facilitate achievement in the content areas for ethnically and linguistically diverse students at the middle school and high school level. Covers foundations of multicultural education and instructional methodology for adaptations for ethnically and linguistically diverse students. Emphasizes inclusive, anti-bias classroom strategies for supporting learning and development of diverse students. Encourages examination of personal beliefs and attitudes about diversity. Introduces teachers to the teaching of English as a second language not only for linguistic development, but for cognitive, academic and social development. Covers both theoretical and applied aspects of second language learning and teaching and provides techniques, activities, strategies and resources to plan instruction for English language learners (ELLs).
