The course introduces Indian art and visual culture from the 1st to 20th century. We look at the materials (paintings, sculpture, and architecture) in the context of religions (Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, and Islam), rituals, and indigenous notions of aesthetics. Students who are interested in religions and visual culture from a comparative perspective are encouraged to take this course but it is open to all who would like to gain insight into the power of sacred images. Recommended Prerequisite: ARTH 2500.
