Students examine modes of artistic expression and viewer response within a society that witnessed significant growth and prosperity. Versatile urban achievements in western Europe will be placed in a broader historical context. The impact of contemporaneous political, social, economic, and religious changes on visual literacy will be investigated through readings, oral report, and written project. Reassessing the terms Romanesque and Gothic is central to course content.
