The course introduces students to India's cultural and religious richness and diversity through the discussion of various aspects of Indian culture (e.g., literature, film, music, food, temples, festivals, customs and taboos). Students will experience and analyze pieces of Indian literature (classical and modern), Indian movies, Bollywood and classical songs, learn about food culture, (syncretic) festivals and traditions, taboos, and popular beliefs. This will guide them to understand the complexity of India's society and culture, and help them appreciate the important contributions literature, culture, and the arts make to everyday life and community in India. Taught in English.
