Description:
This course focuses on the paramount position and various facets and functions of the oil industry in the Middle East. We first look at this region within the framework of its oil resources and enterprises; we then explore the emergence and development of the modern oil industry in the Middle East, how national oil companies (NOCs) operate in selected Middle Eastern countries and the challenges these enterprises face both domestically and internationally. Finally, we review the impact of oil on the Middle East's international relations, governance, economy, and society. The overall goal of the course is to provide a knowledge base so that students better understand the historical events, geopolitical relations, and economic changes in the Middle East from an oil perspective, and can pursue further research in this critical area.
