ENGL 4550 - American Lit: Contemporary

Institution:
Weber State University
Subject:
English
Description:
This course focuses on American literature from 2001 to the present. Like its predecessor, English 4545, it ranges across genres and media to survey traditions and tendencies in contemporary US letters that continue to emerge and evolve. The literature produced during this open-ended period is often less burdened by the legacies of Euro-American literature or the politics of the late 20th century, and hence still fluid in terms of defining period markers. Often written within the wider context of 9/11, U.S. foreign policy, and the changing world order, such work often complicates the aesthetic sensibilities of high postmodernism while providing American literature with a more global set of historical and geographic referents.
