Institution:
University of Utah

Art History

The course explores the visual culture of China's three main religions, Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism, through key monuments of Chinese painting from the Han (206 BCE-220 CE) to the Song (960 CE-1279 CE). We will consider thematic issues that shed light on the major cultural, social, and artistic contexts in which Chinese paintings were produced, viewed, and used as religious visual culture.
