Description:
Advanced dental hygiene theory with emphasis on aggressive forms of periodontal disease, periodontal treatment planning, maintenance procedures, surgical procedures, related systemic diseases and therapy. This course is designated as an Active Learning Professional Practice (ALPP) course. This course allows students to explore and apply content learned in the course in a professional experience away from- the classroom. This course requires a Differential Tuition Rate which is an additional fee of $215 charged per credit hour. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs) At the successful conclusion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Apply knowledge acquired to develop care plans for patients who exhibit periodontitis. 2. Demonstrate the ability to use print and online resources to gather information needed to make informed decisions for evidence based practice. 3. Describe the components and methods relevant to periodontal maintenance. 4. List the various periodontal diseases that can require emergency treatment. 5. Describe the goals, terminology and treatment considerations relevant to periodontal surgery. 6. Demonstrate giving postsurgical instructions to a patient. 7. Identify ways to enhance patient behavior change. 8. Describe how complete and accurate documentation acts as a defense against charges of malpractice. 9. Demonstrate communication techniques to effectively instruct patients how to perform appropriate self-care. 10. Describe treatment strategies that incorporate host modulation. Prerequisite: Admission to the Dixie State University Dental Hygiene program. FA
