This course introduces students to the field of disability studies and examines the intersections between theories of disability, on the one hand, and theories of gender, race/ethnicity, and sexuality, on the other. The course explores the ways in which bodies considered deviant or "bad" can also be understood also as defiant, resistant to conventional understandings of gendered, sexual, and "normal" identity. We will examine the ways in which disabled people have been and continue to be marginalized and dehumanized, but we'll also explore the ways in which the theories of disability scholars, activists, and artists are remapping how all of us think about and experience gender, identity, and humanity. The course includes sections on Deafness, physical disabilities, fatness, and neurodiversity.
