Description:
This course focuses on the history of the Japanese empire. It begins with an examination of national expansion into Hokkaido and Okinawa. It then goes on to examine imperial expansion into Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria, paying special attention to the mobilization of racialized subjects within the empire. Finally, we examine the lingering impacts of empire for Japan's relationship with East Asian nations and the US in the postwar period.
