This class will examine the rich literatures and important literary contributions from among the mosaic of tribal North American cultures that predate European colonization and which have developed in ongoing cultural contact between Native and non-native traditions. Topics may include a survey of genres (fictional narrative, poetry, drama, personal essay, etc.) in oral and written forms, major authors, marginalized practices, social and cross-cultural studies, and literary theory.
