This course will explore the relationship between race and capitalism in American history. Students will be introduced to the notion of 'racial capitalism''the idea that capitalism needs racial divisions to function properly'and will explore the ways race shaped and was shaped by the development of capitalism. Though primarily focused on the Black experience in the United States and abroad, it will also reframe the histories of other social groups in the United States by looking at them through a racial capitalism framework.
