This course draws upon the sociology of health and medicine as well as cultural, biological, psychological, and linguistic anthropology to better understand those factors which influence health and wellbeing (broadly defined); the experience and distribution of illness; the prevention and treatment of sickness; healing processes; the social relations of therapy management; and the cultural importance and utilization of pluralistic medical systems. This course introduces students to the theories and methods anthropologists and sociologists use to study health, illness, health care, and health-seeking behavior from a cross-cultural perspective.
