Description:
The course focuses on fundamentals of steel making, including hot iron pretreatment, refining (both converter and electric arc furnace), continuous casting, and hot rolling. Flowsheet and process parameters for selected steel products will be discussed in class. Hands-on experiences include metallographic analysis of steel samples and a field trip to the Nucor Plymouth plant in northern Utah. Prerequisite: 'C' or better in MET E 3630 OR MSE 3032
