This course will help students understand the patterns of legal reasoning and argument and to develop skills in formulating, presenting and critiquing legal arguments. Students will learn the theory behind the adversarial system and the various procedural and evidentiary rules in place to achieve the system's goals. Students will practice the techniques used to conduct legal trials, including opening statements, direct examinations, cross examinations, closing arguments, and objections. **COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLOs)** At the successful conclusions of this course: 1. Students will develop an understanding of the sources of law; court structure and procedure; legal reasoning; litigation techniques; and courtroom decorum. 2. Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills by performing successfully in mock trial competitions that require them to respond to new arguments and situations during the trial. 3. Students will strengthen poise and oral communication skills through performing mock trial simulations as attorneys and witnesses. 4. Students will acquire teamwork skills as they prepare mock trial cases with other students. 5. Students will utilize critical thinking skills by anticipating answers to prewritten questions from opposing witnesses and reframing their arguments based on those answers. Prerequisites: CJ 3270 (Grade C- or higher) and can be concurrently enrolled.
