    The Basic Outdoor Leadership Training (BOLT) Program is an SUU Outdoors program that creates opportunities for the SUU community to reach leadership and developmental goals for students, faculty, staff, and organizations. Students enrolled in the course will learn and develop outdoor recreation-based leadership training focused in areas related to outdoor education theory, leadership in the outdoors, group management, and risk management. Students will develop these skills along with the technical skills needed to lead backpacking trips for SUU students. The class will culminate with a 4-day backpacking trip planned and carried out by students with the mentorship of the instructor.     This is a beginning to intermediate level mountain biking class focused on developing awareness. Classes will consist of mountain bike rides, skill development drills, basic maintenance, and more. No mountain biking experience is needed. Students must have a properly functioning mountain bike and biking-specific helmet available for the entire duration of the course. Students should already know how to ride a bike before taking this course and should recognize that biking is an aerobic activity that can be physically taxing. Our goal for each class session is not to cover a lot of miles, but to cover skills and drills to become more effective bikers. In that process we may ride from 3-10 miles of trail.     Students will learn about the principles of Leave No Trace and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills through classroom sessions as well as a required outdoor trip that will take place on a weekend. The course prepares students to teach the Leave No Trace curriculum in a variety of settings, such as schools, camps, parks, wilderness, and front country areas. (Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)]

    The SCUBA I course provides students with the training required for successful completion of the PADI Open Water scuba certification. Class consists of academic work as well as hands on use of scuba diving equipment in a confined water setting (swimming pool). There is a fee for this course that will range from $275 or more, depending on the current certification costs and equipment rental prices.     Wilderness First Aid introduces concepts of medical care in a wilderness setting, focusing on Basic Life Support skills, minor trauma, selected environmental topics, spine assessment and the ruling-out process, allergic and toxic reactions, and "common" medical emergencies.     With an emphasis on climbing movement, bouldering is unique in that it relies less on equipment and more on technique. This class will provide instruction on climbing techniques as they pertain to improving confidence and ability as well as a repertoire of movement while also providing insight into the ethics and issues that face the bouldering community. This class will provide information important to transition from indoor to outdoor climbing. Students should anticipate and be prepared to climb up to a level of at least 12 feet (3.6 meters) while using padding and spotters for protection. The course will include 2-3 required field trips that will occur on weekends. (Fall, Spring) [Graded (Standard Letter)]
