  • ORPT 2030: Backpacking II

    This course will further develop student's skills in backcountry travel by introducing and developing orienteering and navigation skills; understanding backcountry nutrition and cooking; and preparing for efficient, longer duration trips. Other aspects of the course include expedition behavior, decision making, outdoor leadership development and risk management and mitigation. Classes will be experiential and the curriculum will focus on developing off of basic skill sets learned from ORPT 1030 and/or previous basic experience.     This course introduces students to the variety of careers and professions in the park, recreation, and tourism (PRT) industry. Students will be introduced to a variety of organizations and agencies providing recreation and tourism services and managing the places where outdoor recreation activities take place. Students will complete a practicum with a current professional in the field, and begin to develop their own professional materials and competencies. The course will also introduce students to trends, challenges, and opportunities facing the PRT industry. Class meetings will take place indoors and in the field.
