    This course examines the many factors to consider when serving culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) individuals with communication needs. Learner outcomes will focus on achieving a deeper understanding of varying linguistic and cultural mores within various ethnic minority and underrepresented populations including those who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or Deaf. In addition, content will address barriers many of these individuals face when accessing educational and medical services. Learning experiences provide students with community-based, hands-on experiences when serving these populations locally and globally.

    This field-work course is an extension of CSD 2600: Serving Diverse Populations with Communication Needs. This course is designed to maintain ongoing support for Community Engaged Learning (CEL) partners previously established during CSD 2600 as well as establish new community partners. Students will serve underserved individuals who may be culturally and linguistically diverse, have special needs, or be marginalized due to life circumstances. Students will gain a deeper understanding of health and educational disparities in various communities. In addition, students will learn how to identify and work towards reducing barriers experienced by individuals marginalized in the community. Prerequisites: 'C-' or better in CSD 2600 OR Instructor Consent

    This course is intended to provide class participants with an introduction to autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The class will provide an overview of the characteristics of ASD across the lifespan in the areas of language/communication, behavior, social-emotional, and cognition. Current developments and research findings will be highlighted related to diagnosis etiology, and prevalence. A basic introduction to behavior analytic principles and concepts will be provided, as well as an introductory overview of intervention approaches in ASD. The course will also involve a focus on family impact and perspectives.

    This course is suitable for a variety of majors and is intended to explore communication disorders and how they are portrayed in the media. Major communication disorders will be discussed from a clinical and scientific perspective, with information provided about the characteristics of the disorders, including etiology, assessment, and treatment options. The portrayal of these major communication disorders in the media will be used to explore perceptions of the disorders and people who have them, such that students will learn about communication disorders in general and then be able to compare that knowledge with the way the disorders are portrayed in the media.

    Fundamental topics in acoustics and auditory physiology are reviewed to provide a foundation for the study of audiology and hearing research. The first few classes cover basic concepts in mathematics and physics. Several weeks are then dedicated to studying topics in acoustics including simple harmonic motion, simple/complex sounds, time/frequency representations of sound, wave propagation, decibels, and digital sound processing. The remainder of the course covers auditory perception, and the anatomy and physiology of the outer ear, middle ear, inner ear, auditory nerve, auditory brainstem, and auditory cortex. Perceptual abilities to detect, discriminate, and identify sounds are discussed, and applications of hearing science to audio engineering and clinical audiology are covered. Corequisites: CSD 4201.
