  Understand the basic concepts of fires and how these can be used to prevent and control underground mine fires. U.S. legislation and governing standards on mine fires are reviewed. Ignition sources, air contaminants and control methods including mine ventilation, fuel management, and personnel evacuation are examined. Two case studies, are used to illustrate these concepts.
