    This course is designed to introduce students to the foundational techniques for skiing in backcountry alpine terrain in the Wasatch Range of Utah. Course content will focus on avalanche awareness (rescue, terrain, weather, snowpack and decision-making/human factors), travel techniques (split board, alpine and telemark, route-finding, laying of a skin track, terrain selection), side-country ethics, choosing appropriate tours, navigation, basic 1st aid, and field repairs. Course content will be learned and applied over one classroom session and four field-based experiences. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in the course. Expert level skiing is not required. Not enrolled in a high school program.

    This class will focus on fundamental mountaineering skills such as steep snow climbing, ice axe technique, footwork, self-arrest, route finding in avalanche terrain, construction of snow anchors, relevant technical rope management skills, and winter camping. Content will be learned and applied over one classroom session and an overnight two-day field experience in a high alpine environment. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for alpine environments and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in the course. Not enrolled in a high school program.

    For snowboarders looking to experience the backcountry via splitboard, this course focuses on the equipment, techniques, and knowledge needed for competent winter backcountry travel. Splitboards are an ideal option for snowboarders traveling in the backcountry and this course is an opportunity to learn the tricks and secrets behind safe, fun, and efficient travel. Through a classroom meeting and three field experiences, students will be introduced to the setup and use of spiltboards, logistics of backcountry touring, and avalanche safety as it relates to splitboarding. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be discussed. Not enrolled in a high school program.

    Students will finish this course with the ability to demonstrate competency in fundamental ice climbing techniques, Leave No Trace skills, and associated safety skills, and associated safety skills including proper equipment selection and use. This will be accomplished through discussions, demonstrations, and practical, activity-based learning. Additionally, students will demonstrate an increased understanding of issues and guidelines related to the management and usage of administered public lands as they relate ice climbing and other uses. Not enrolled in a high school program.

    Designed for beginning through intermediate skiers, this course provides practical skills and information on resource and facility management, ski history, and ski techniques. Prerequisites: Not enrolled in a high school program
