    Issues and strategies related to student teaching will be discussed and practiced. Students will observe in community sites serving premature and at-risk infants and will hear from health professionals and families as they examine a variety of family and cultural perspectives related to young children with developmental delays. Prerequisite: SP ED 5310, 5320, 5330, and 5340. Co-requisite: SP ED 5350, 5360, 5390, and 5400.

    This course was designed to provide information about individuals with disabilities specifically as it relates to physical education. A variety of disabilities are discussed. Consideration is given to the characteristics, limitations, and special needs of these individuals as well as teaching strategies and indicated and contraindicated activities in physical education.

    Introduction to the field of visual impairments including the impact of visual impairments of development; basic anatomy of the eye; educational implications of eye disorders;; and educational programming for students who are blind or visually impaired. Prerequisites: "C" or better in Special Education Teacher Core.

    Students explore attitudes and beliefs related to visual impairment and blindness. The impact of vision loss on the psychosocial functioning of individuals and their families is included. In addition, self-concept, self-esteem, and strategies to enhance these areas in children with visual impairments are studied.

    This course was designed to provide students the background knowledge and skills to implement the achievement-based curriculum model in their teaching. Students are provided opportunities to develop a curriculum, assess students in motor skills and fitness, plan lessons based on assessment, implement the lessons incorporating the principles of teaching, evaluate student outcomes by measuring their progress, and evaluate their own teaching based on student outcomes.

    Students will demonstrate the ability to identify the parts of the visual system, development of the eye, understand and interpret eye reports, as well as translate the information into an educational plan. Students will also gain an understanding of disease (hereditary and other) and pathologic processes of the human eye, how vision is affected and how treatment is provided. Prerequisite: SP ED 5410 Corequisite: SP ED 5432

    Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding in functional implications and educational considerations of many major eye diseases and disorders; the different eye care professionals and their role in vision care; the purposes/integral facets of a functional vision assessment and a learning media assessment; the factors and issues in deciding between the use of large print vs. regular print books and materials, as well as other media; the basic laws of optics and other components/resources specific to students with low vision.
