    This course offers a hands on workshop for the traditional building skills of the ancient art of making and decorating ceramic tiles. Participants will learn how to roll and cut handmade tiles from a sheet of damp clay. Participants will decorate "biscuits" or clay fired tiles, using traditional methods which have been used since the time of ancient Egyptians. Participants will also learn how to get the tiles ready for final firing by applying different glazes for different effects. This workshop will include a field trip to the Snow college ceramic art studio to observe the final stages of loading the kiln and the process of firing tiles. A brief demonstration on how to cut tiles on a wet saw and the installation of tiles will also be presented by an expert.

    This course offers a hands-on workshop for the traditional building skills of decorative and faux painting. The course content includes faux painting techniques in marbling, wood graining, gold leafing, fresco art, antiquing, gilding, sgraffito, wall treatments, and others.     This course is a hands on workshop for tradItional building skill of architectural blacksmithing. The course includes the philosophy of historic ironwork and the reproduction of forged hardware such as hinges, latches, hooks and various tools.     This course is a hands-on workshop for the traditional building skills of millwork/ woodwork. The course includes the philosophy of historic preservation and traditional practices for the repair and replicating of historic moldings and millwork. This course covers many aspects of millwork such as: use of hand planes, sharpening a plane iron, and tuning a hand plane, replicating and producing moldings, coping and mitering base and crown moldings, using historic wooden molding planes, using liquid wood and epoxies, producing cove moldings on the table saw, sharpening and burnishing a cabinet scraper, and other tricks of the trade.

    Preservation and restoration work in England/ Wales/ Scotland and other places will give students actual experience working on centuries-old buildings while experiencing the culture of that country. Each year TBSI will schedule trips with a duration of one or two or three weeks with an emphasis in stone/masonry or stain glass/ faux/ tile painting or woodworking/ millwork/ carving/ building techniques or etc. related to preservation and restoration. The participants will learn history, experience the culture and do hands-on work in the particular area of travel.

    This course provides an introduction to and overview of current historic preservation practices including the Secretary of Interior's standards for preservation, rehabilitation, and restoration of historic buildings. Methods used to fabricate building materials using traditional building skills and craft will be investigated.
